Avatar The Last Airbender Movie

avatar the last airbender

I just watched this movie and I was surprised on how bad it turned out to be. The first mistake was character focus.  The story starts with Katara doing some water bending and hitting his brother Sokka.  They then found Aang (or “Oong” as I keep on hearing on the movie) frozen under suspended animation in an iceberg below them. Sokka breaks the ice sheet that trap the iceberg below the water and Katara breaks the Ice-Air bubble.

This is great but who was that guy on the navy ship? Well that was Zuko, never introduced and I have no idea what he wants. Luckily I watched the whole series so I am guided but I frankly get lost on the movie.  Prince Zuko attack the tribe (gosh, I finally learned who that guy was) and then Aang come out and presented himself to the fire prince Zuko from an igloo.

The director made a pride choice of changing how the name was pronounced into Ahng  from Aang because he wants it to be more racial accurate. He base it on an aspect that Aang was an Asian, true but why Ahng? Well the director was an Indian who speaks Hindi. It may work well if all Asian speaks that same way as Hindi does.

Problem is, if he wants it to be accurate then why do the crown prince Zuko, General Iroh, the firelord and Azula are not japenese? The series portrayed them as a country resembling  Japanese people and culture which can be concluded that the upper fire country members are Japanese.

avatar kyoshiThe story have stripped a lot of critical parts and inserted non important ones. Showcase a non chronological order of events and modified some parts which never happened on the original series. One of this was on Kyoshi Island (the place where Avatar Kyoshi was born), there are no Kyoshi warriors. Instead they are replaced by a mob of earth benders.

Also it is worth noting that on Aang’s travel to the air temple, the dead are scattered on the grounds while on the series they are cramped and burned in the nearby fire nation camp. Aang found Momo  or shall I say Momo found Aang but the named Momo was never been mentioned on the movie. It was also funny that Aang never found out about the avatar series of statues that alerted the fire nation about him instead the avatar statues was discovered by Aang by himself when he ran away from Sokka and Katara.

This is where a monk betrayed him and showed him and explained about the avatar statues where he got captured and then rescued by the phantom who is Prince Zuko. This never happened on the series and the absence of the discovery for these statues is a key point on the story. If the fire nation did not know that he was alive since this was triggered by the statues then how did they know that they are facing an air bender without displaying his air bending first? Surely Aang was betrayed by some fire temple mages but he was not sold and he was not captured here and also he was not alone.

A far more search on how the movie was on movie review sites, fan sites and independent bloggers gives a total film failure. And almost everyone said that the movie was BORING.

I would just like to say na sayng yung oppurtunity na gawing moviw ang avatar series. It was one of the best told animated series of all time which has a very good storyline. In fact, it is the only cartoon I watch even if Im already 20 years old. The problem of the movie was that it had almost every part wrong. The choice of characters really did not portray the original cast in the cartoon version. Aang was okay, Zuko was acceptable (thought he seems to have held back his anger most of the time), Sokka wasn’t really convincing. I hated the way that the actor played the part. Sokka was supposed to be a character of fun that brings about the neutral side of the story. His character was always serious and showing how Sokka is only good in solving problems and making plans. Katara was okay too, but the sometimes she bores me also. She acts like there is a drag to her every move.

Speaking of drag, the movie have parts that should have been filled up more. I really couldnt get why the bending techniques of the characters are very slow and needs a lot of action to perform. And oh, correct me if I’m wrong, Fire benders are supposed to have the gift of being able to create their own fire out of nothing. The ones in the movie are very weak if you ask me. Also, in the part where Aang and their friends were in Kyoshi Island, I would have wanted to see Suki and the rest of the warriors, instead I saw earthbenders that were like dancing and only able to bend i piece of rock. And why are the characters seemed to not hurt by the bending techniques?? haha!

All I can recommend for the Book 2, if ever there is, please stick to the original script and theme of the story. Many people do watch Avatar the Series worldwide, so many will really critique on the movie. And so far, Book 1 failed the standards.

Train the actors to study on their characters more, or choose to replace them and hire better ones that really represents the original. I am looking forward that the Fire Lord will have a longer hair, Zuko’s uncle will be more fat, the blind earthbender will be as tough as her name sounds, and their should be more humor in the story. I hope that the producers and director of the movie can make something more believable next time. Thanks.

that director just tried to further his own career and make some money, he never cared about the film. he thought a few special effects would keep everyone happy.

Yes, the director cared more on the money than respect the beauty of the story.
